Depending on what studies you read online viewers either spend 4 seconds or 10 seconds on your home page. If they find something that grabs their attention they will stay longer.... But that is the time you can average on grabbing and keeping them.

So you not only have to gain their attention, but you have to gain their trust, convey who you are, what you do and what makes you better than the competition. All in a matter of 10 seconds, (preferably less)...

This might sound like a really daunting task. How do you grab their attention and keep all in a matter of seconds?

Well the answer is simple...

1. Have a strong central message. You need to be able to give your users a summary of what you are about, what you an offer them and why you are the best choice. Take sometime and write down a summary that best describes your business in the amount of time it would take you to explain it to someone on a elevator ride... We are talking 4 floors at most not the penthouse suite at the Smith's Tower... Think of what you would say to someone in the least amount of time.

2. Stop the over crowding of your homepage. Your homepage is the gateway yo the rest of your site. This is not the place where you place all the content you can possibly squeeze in. This is the starting point. A clean window that invites the user in for more... And this brings me to...

3. Avoid clutter at all cost!!! Aim to only give across one central message. Yes you can change this message ever so often. But aim to keep it at one thing and steer clear of any secondary messages that might distract your user. So if your aim this month is to shine a spotlight on your latest amazing deal then make that the single focus and nothing else.

4. And finally: Use a clear call to action. What this means is that you give a clear action plan for consumers to take the next step in buying or applying or subscribing. Say you want them to take advantage of your great product offer this month then give them the next step like "click here and apply" or "Add to cart".

These are just some of the tips you can use on your site. Check in tomorrow when I will be sharing some of the Do's and Don'ts of building a website in a 2 part posting.

I am sure in the past few months you have seen one or two of these on a poster, lamp pole or even on one or two medicine boxes and wondered what it's all about...

Well this is what's called a QR barcode... This amazing little bit of technology was designed in Japan and I am going to give you a few great ideas on how to scan it, read it, and then how to use it to not only draw traffic to your site, but how to let these little pixels of wonder giving your contact details a breeze. These are just two of the many things these little blocks can do.

If you want to know what this little box is....Click here to find out

Now on to business.... Or more precicley, How is this QR code going to help your business.

There are many ways in which to use the QR code. But if it comes to making them work to gain you some more leads here are a few ideas:

1. Why not print this little bugger onto a T-shirt? That way you can catch people's curiosity by putting in a simple catch phrase that makes them what to find out more. Like say your a Apple Mac stockist and you want to increase traffic to your site... How about printing the following phrase" Want a bunch of them Apple?" and a QR code that leads to your website when scanned... People would want to see what it is all about

2. Or let's say instead of printing only your contact details and logo on your next business card why not include a QR code that let's client scan it and have all your details right there on their phones ready to be saved as a contact. All they have to do is press is "add new contact"

You can even keep a QR code on your mobile phone that you can show to potential contacts so all they need do is scan your code and your added as a contact to their address book. This could definitely work in cutting those business card printing costs.

3. So your playing the social media game and want to increase your "Likes"? Why not include a QR code in your brochure printing or your next advert campaign in GQ and have readers must scan the code to like you on Facebook. You can even ace it on your product packaging so that when clients use your products or services they can let the world know.

4. Another option is to run a customer survey on your site. Then just place a board up in your store at a till point or even on your merchandise with your QR code and some phrase such as " Rant or Rave - give us your feedback". Ask clients to scan and rate your products, customer services and maybe give some feedback on the form on your site that gets sent to you to show you what's hot and not with your customers experience of your Company.

5. You can even set your QR code for that SMS campaign your planning on running. All the participants have to do is scan the code and it automatically sets up the SMS in their messaging outbox with your number... All they have to do is press send. Or if you want them to send your their name and number in the SMS.... Add that and press send.

And then lastly for my suggestion list... How about adding a QR code on your next company branded car. In this way people can get your details fast and easy...rather than blocking traffic trying to add your manually as a new contact

As you can see there are many way in which the QR code can help you reach your client base in a fast and easy manner. It might be a strange little block but it packs a big punch...
